Updates on current research into the activities of the members of the then Sunderland Cricket and Rugby Football Club during the First World War.

Updated Spring 2017

ASHBROOKE SPORTS CLUB

FIRST WORLD WAR MEMORIAL BOARD

Initial idea

Between 2014 and 2018, the board  in the corridor between the bar and lounge will be used to recall the efforts of members of the then Sunderland Cricket and Football Club who served between 1914 and 1918. The individual case studies will be based on the list of those who died during the conflict and those who were given awards for bravery and service. These lists appeared originally in To Ashbrooke and Beyond when it was published in 1963 and cover over 80 individuals. Further research in the club's membership and minute books reveals that over 250 club members past and present joined the forces so some of those not mentioned in the book will also feature.

After just over two years research at Ashbrooke and in the National Archives I have now completed the 250 plus mini biographies and most of the introduction. I will be getting in touch with interested parties relating to individual case studies in the near future.
