I have been using song both traditional and my own for forty years years in supporting literacy, history and citizenship in the classroom.
My success dates back to the mid 1970s when my CSE course History through Traditional Song gained praise in Roy Palmer's OUP book Folk Music in Schools.
During my time in teaching (1971-2003 including 30 years as HOD), some of my achievements included;
- Fifteen years (1988-2003) as primary liaison officer, using song as support in a number of Hartlepool primary schools.
- Production of a tape of children's songs for primary school support entitled The Splash Hits of Diver Dan
- Production of a tape of Victorian Songs to support primary history and tied into national curriculum levels used in over 100 Cleveland schools
- Having two samples of my innovative work featured in articles in the Times Educational Supplement
More recently I produced the song and music pages for the Civic Trust's Heritage Open Days Schools' support project. I also work with adults and lecture - from family history and local history groups to national and university audiences. I work currently at a rate commensurate with supply teaching but also taking into account travel and accommodation costs where necessary. Contact me by either method above
